An arrest was made Friday in the death of a Taos woman who was fatally stabbed in her apartment.

Nathaniel Duran, 18, was arrested in the death of Marioara Shand, 38, Taos County Sheriff Charlie Martinez said. Shand was found stabbed to death in her apartment on July 9.

Nathaniel Duran is the grandson of Louisa and Edward Duran, the landlords of the apartment Shand had been renting.

"It's been a pretty intense investigation," Martinez said.

Duran is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death. He will remain in police custody until a hearing scheduled for Monday morning, Martinez said.

Authorities had originally pursued the possibility that Shand's death was related to another murder case in the area.

State Police continued Friday to search for a 23-year-old parolee accused of taking the car of LeAnne Martinez.

LeAnne Martinez, 22, was found stabbed to death in her mobile home on Sunday.

State police believe an unidentified woman helped Richard Fresquez flee the state. They would not say where he might be.

Fresquez was being sought for questioning in LeAnne Martinez's death.

State Police Lt. Pete Kasettas said Fresquez is suspected of being with an unidentified heavyset blond woman, who investigators think helped him flee the state.

Police believe the two are traveling in a late '90s, teal green Chrysler, Kasettas said. He did not know the model of the vehicle.

Fresquez had been traveling with 16-year-old Paulina Barreras of Albuquerque in the city earlier in the week.
