A 16-year-old Apopka High School student died after the car he was a passenger in collided with a tree early Friday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators said 16-year-old Devon Blake Bowers was driving eastbound on Ponkan Road around 2 a.m. Friday.

For unknown reasons, he drove off the road and then returned into the eastbound lanes. The 2001 Ford SUV he was driving traveled across the westbound lanes and off onto the road again, colliding with a tree.

From the impact, 16-year-old Micah Boyd, a passenger in the rear of the car, was thrown into the cargo area of the SUV. He died from the collision.

Boyd and the third teen in the car, 17-year-old Jeremy Wayne Pries, were seriously injured from the crash and were transported to local hospitals where their conditions are unknown.

FHP investigators said Bower and Pries took the car without permission from Bower's mother.

It has been determined that Bowers only had a learner's permit and was violating the "business purpose only" restriction on his license.

The driver was the only person wearing a seatbelt.

The victim and the two survivors are students at Apopka High School.
