An 18-year-old man in his first year at Syracuse University was found dead this morning in his dorm room, Syracuse police said.
The death is not considered to be suspicious, Sgt. Tom Connellan said. Evidence found in the Dellplain Hall room led police to the conclude that the man committed suicide, Connellan said.
The student was identified by Syracuse Police as Jordan Schaffer, of Montville, N.J.
In a message to students, faculty and staff, SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor said Jordan was "a promising member of our first-year class, as well as a member of the Whitman Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Learning Community."
"The death of a student is painful for any campus community," Cantor wrote. "Everyone feels impacted in different ways and during these times we draw together to comfort those affected by this loss."
The university provided on-site counseling and support for the Dellplain residents and staff.
