A young man killed Wednesday when his station wagon crashed into a downtown Gig Harbor building was Seth Ryan Grigar, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office said Thursday.

Grigar, 25, lived in the Gig Harbor area. He graduated from Gig Harbor High School, Tacoma Community College and Western Washington University, according to his MySpace Web page. He enjoyed snowboarding, fishing and the mountains.

At the family home Thursday evening, a family friend said the Grigars had no comment. Seth Grigar's mother, Janice, is a speech and language therapist at Harbor Heights Elementary School in Gig Harbor.

The investigation into why Grigar was driving so fast - witnesses said the car was going 70 to 100 mph - when it crashed at the bottom of Pioneer Way was continuing Thursday, but detectives had no answers.

"I'm not sure we'll ever know the 'why' portion of this," police Sgt. Kelly Busey said.

Grigar's Subaru crashed through a brick planting strip and into the former Harbor Inn Restaurant building at 3111 Harborview Drive. The station wagon went most of the way through the building before it stopped.

Investigators inspected the car and found no obvious mechanical failures, Busey said.

"Certainly, the vehicle could not have reached such a high rate of speed simply by coasting," he said. "Some form of acceleration was probably involved."

The results of toxicology tests, which would shed light on whether drugs or alcohol were in Grigar's system, will not be available for several weeks.
