A man was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition Sunday afternoon after a two-vehicle vehicle collision at Avenue O and 10th Street West, deputies said.

Tyler Lundin was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills with "major head injuries," said Deputy Andy Lynch of the Palmdale Sheriff's Station.

"He is in stable yet critical condition," he said.

As Lundin's silver Toyota Tacoma truck traveled eastbound on Avenue O, the driver of a blue Honda Civic traveling westbound "failed to yield at a green light" as he sought to turn left onto 10th Street West, Lynch said. That resulted in a "major collision."

"The guy's car clipped the front of the truck," he said. "The truck started rolling and flipped and flipped again."

The man, an undocumented immigrant who goes by the name of "Willy," attempted to flee the wreckage scene on foot after the collision, Lynch said.

"The guy didn't have any papers, so he tried to take off," he explained.

After witnessing the collision, three passers-by ran after the man and detained him, Lynch said.

"The guy just couldn't wait," he added.

The man is in custody at the Palmdale Sheriff's Station, Lynch said.
