A woman found dead in a parking lot in downtown San Rafael was identified by police Wednesday as 33-year-old Ashley Yamauchi of Greenbrae.

Yamauchi's partially clad body was found lying on the ground at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday on the 700 block of Fourth Street, wedged between a parked car and the wall of a business, said police spokeswoman Margo Rohrbacher.

Yamauchi was the victim of a homicide, but authorities have declined to discuss details of how she was killed pending results of an autopsy by the Marin County coroner.

Yamauchi was last seen Monday night in the Fourth Street Tavern at 711 Fourth St., which is near the parking lot where she was found, Rohrbacher said. A business owner arriving for work discovered the body, which was not visible from the street, and called police, authorities said.

Yamauchi worked as a nanny for a San Rafael family and was the mother of an 8-year-old girl who is now staying with her father, Rohrbacher said. The victim had joint custody with the girl's father, police said.
