Two boys died when a 12-year-old driver took his father's pickup truck for a joyride and crashed into a tree in Spring, officials told KPRC Local 2.
Deputies said Justin Dieckman, 12, snuck out of his house and left in the family's pickup truck while his mother was sleeping and his father was at work.
He then picked up four friends who were on his neighborhood swim team, according to authorities.
The joyride came to a crashing end at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday when the boy lost control of the truck and smashed into a tree in front of a home on West Rayford Road near Haverford Road, officials said.
"He left the roadway, traveled about 55 yards on the shoulder of the road, went through an intersection and up into a yard and struck a tree," said Lt. David Blakenship with Harris County Constable Precinct 4.
Investigators said Dieckman and 12-year-old Jonathan Gwin, a front passenger, were killed.
An 11-year-old boy and his 13-year-old sister were treated and released. A 12-year-old girl's leg was broken.
By Thursday afternoon, friends dropped off flowers and teddy bears at the accident site.
"They are good friends of our son and daughter and we know they're hurting, and our kids could have been with them," a woman said.
Investigators said the children were still in their pajamas.
Harris County's curfew for teens under 16 years of age is midnight.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
