A Chicopee teen, celebrating a win by his school's soccer team, collapsed on the field over the weekend. Neither firefighters who rushed to the scene, nor doctors at the hospital, could save the life of 17-year-old Steven Vaselacopoulos.

Friend and classmate, Julian Quinones, was on the field when Vaselacopoulos collapsed. "When I saw him fall, I thought he was kidding, he's always playing jokes, you know, I thought somebody like hit him or something and he just fell, laying there, laughing. And then he didn't get up...I didn't know what to think," he said.

The Chicopee High School student who made everyone laugh wasn't playing a joke this time. "You would never think it would happen to you and just bam, it happens like that. It's just something that's so unexpected and it just comes out of nowhere. It's hard," said friend, Jon Campbell.

Ludlow police and paramedics rushed to Lusitano Field, but were unable to revive the teen. His death was an unexpected tragedy that's left family members like aunt, Angela Courchesne, reeling. "It was a complete shock to all of us to lose somebody so young and so vital. He was just a good kid," said Courchesne.

Steven's father, George Vaselacopoulos is left wondering what took the life of his son and best friend, "I have no explanation why this would happen, why it would happen, why God would be so cruel to let this happen to such a nice kid."

Bright, talented and popular, Steven was known for his sense of humor and big school spirit. Friend, Sean Moylan, said, "He was there for everybody no matter what - whether it came to sports or life - he supported us, everything we did."

Now his friends are left to support each other. "Every person here, everyone who knows him loves him. He had the biggest heart that I've ever known," Moylan said.
