A Republic teen has died as a result of injuries she suffered in a two-car traffic crash in Negaunee Township on Christmas Eve.

Amber N. Kulju, 18, was a passenger in a 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that was broadsided shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 41 and Midway Drive.

Kulju was pronounced dead that evening at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, according to Michigan State Police troopers from the Negaunee Township post.

The car Kulju was riding in was driven by Ryan M. Finley, 24, of Negaunee. Finley was attempting to cross the westbound traffic lane from the median in the center of U.S. 41 to reach Midway Drive.

Adam A. Gray, 26, of Hancock was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala west along U.S. 41. He attempted to stop to avoid the collision, but he was unable to do so, troopers said.

Gray's car struck the passenger side of the Finley vehicle. Passing motorists trained in the medical profession stopped to help at the scene of the crash.

Kulju was extricated from the vehicle by personnel from Marquette County Extrication and taken to MGH. Finley suffered minor injuries in the accident.

Police said seat belts were used and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the cause of the crash. A report of the incident will be reviewed by the Marquette County Prosecutor's office, according to troopers.

Assisting were Marquette County Sheriff's Department deputies and Negaunee Township Fire Department personnel.
