A 19-year-old resident died Monday night when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed on West Wrentham Road.

Patrick R. Holmes, of 41 Abbott Run Valley Rd., was riding east with four other motorcyclists shortly before 10 p.m. when he went off the road at a curve near Old West Wrentham Road.

According to the police, Holmes failed to negotiate the turn and struck a guardrail. He was thrown from his 1998 silver Suzuki and landed near the house at 93 West Wrentham Rd.

One of the motorcyclists called 911. Holmes was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Yesterday, the police had an accident reconstruction team at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, but the police believe excessive speed was a factor in the accident. A helmet was found near the crash site, but it is unclear whether Holmes, who graduated from Cumberland High last June, was wearing it.
