Burnsville Police said they believe two people found in a burning apartment in Burnsville, Minn. were involved in a murder-suicide.

An acquaintance of the victim said Brittany Givens-Copeland, 24, of Bloomington, Minn., was planning to break up with Adam Williams, 23, on Sunday evening.

According to Mandi Harry, Givens-Copeland had been involved in an on-again, off-again relationship with Williams. Both were found dead in Williams' apartment on Portland Avenue South.

The Dakota County Coroner's Office said Givens-Copeland's cause of death is "undetermined homicidal violence." Police said it appeared she died of either asphyxiation or drowning.

The coroner's office said it appeared Williams died of smoke inhalation.

In all, about 60 apartments were evacuated. Most residents were allowed to return to their units overnight, but eight apartments had smoke and water damage. The management is hoping to get those families back in as soon as the homes are cleaned up.

Investigators are in continued talks with family members and friends to determine a possible motive in the killing.

Police didn't say what they believed was the direct cause of the fire.
