An inmate apparently hanged himself in his cell over the weekend at the Shelby County Detention Center, said officials.

The body of Greenup resident Jason W. Cox, 33, was discovered by a correctional officer at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, according to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office. An autopsy Monday morning at Springfield Memorial Hospital showed Cox died from asphyxiation due to hanging, said the sheriff's office.

"It's (an) apparent suicide," said Shelby County Coroner Brian Green.

The sheriff's office said the investigation continues, and Green said a coroner's inquest is pending.

In addition to the coroner and sheriff's office, the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations unit and ISP Zone 5 investigators were called to look into Cox's death.

According to the office of Shelby County State's Attorney Allan Lolie, Cox was in jail because of a contempt of court order as well a charge of criminal trespass to property, for which he had yet to post bail.

The trespassing charge alleged that on June 11, Cox "knowingly remained" in a Shelbyville apartment despite a request by the owner to leave.

During his first appearance in front of Associate Judge Michael McHaney on June 13, Cox was ordered to serve six months in the detention center following an outburst in court, said the state's attorney's office.

The coroner said further details will be released at an inquest to be held at a later date.
