Shelby officials identify man who hanged self in jail cell

SHELBYVILLE - Authorities have released the identity of an inmate who apparently hanged himself in his cell Saturday evening at the Shelby County Detention Center. The body of Jason W. Cox, 33, of Greenup was discovered by a correctional officer at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, according to the Shelby County Sheriffs Office. An autopsy Monday morning at Springfield Memorial Hospital showed Cox died from asphyxiation due to hanging, said the sheriffs office.
"Its (an) apparent suicide," said Shelby County Coroner Brian Green.
The sheriffs office said the investigation continues, and Green said a coroners inquest is pending.
In addition to the coroner and sheriffs office, investigators from the Illinois State Police were called in to look into Coxs death.
Cox was in jail because of a contempt of court order as well a charge of criminal trespass to property, for which he had yet to post bail, according to information from the office of Shelby County States Attorney Allan Lolie.
The trespassing charge alleged that on June 11, Cox "knowingly remained" in a Shelbyville apartment despite a request by the owner to leave.
During his first appearance in front of Associate Judge Michael McHaney on June 13, Cox was ordered to serve six months in the detention center following an outburst in court, said the states attorneys office.
The coroner said further details will be released at the inquest.
