Rochester Police said today that the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the woman shot and killed in Monday's murder-suicide on Cliffmor Street.

Maria Rivera, 35, of 16 Cliffmor, was killed after her former boyfriend, who has yet to be identified, kicked down a door to her house about 4:45 a.m. and entered the residence armed with a long gun. An altercation between the 36-year-old man and Rivera followed. The woman called 911 for help but when officers arrived at the scene they heard several shots being fired inside the house.

When officers entered the home, they found the woman had been shot several times in the upper and lower extremities, according to police. She was pronounced dead shortly after Rural/Metro emergency workers put her in an ambulance.

Three children, ages 1, 13 and 19, were home when the altercation took place and made it out of the house safely. They were assisted on the scene by members of the Rochester Police Department's Family and Crisis Intervention Team and are now staying with relatives, according to police.

Officers declared the incident to be over about 8:15 a.m. The 36-year-old man was found dead inside the home. Singletary said the man sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper body. A long gun was recovered from the residence.

Police say Maria Rivera is not related to Tyquan Rivera, 14, of 65 Dayton St., who was arrested today in connection with the shooting of Rochester Police Officer Anthony DiPonzio.
