A CSU student who was hit by a vehicle while crossing University Avenue Thursday morning has died, university officials said.

Brian Lukas, 19, was walking across University near Clearview Circle about 9:30 a.m. when he was struck, said John Lester, Columbus State University spokesman. He was taken to The Medical Center, which contacted Lester about 3 p.m. with the news of Lukas' death.

"His injuries were very severe," Lester said.

Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower said Lukas was pronounced dead at 2:29 p.m. at the hospital.

He died of blunt force head trauma.

Lukas of Kennesaw, Ga., enrolled in fall 2007 at CSU. He was a junior with a double major in communications and French. Lukas was seeking his teacher certification in the latter, Lester said.

The CSU Counseling Center will be available at 1 p.m. today at the university's main and downtown campuses. Students can seek support in the Columbus Room at the Davidson Student Center and at the student lounge at 1011 Broadway, Lester said.
