The body of a man being sought in connection with a double homicide investigation in Surry County early Tuesday evening was found at a gas station in Lavonia, Ga. that same evening.

Authorities in Mount Airy were looking for a man identified as Shawn Bowman, 25, who they said may have shot and killed a man and woman at a home in the 700 block of Holly Avenue at about 5:30 p.m.

Lavonia Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the body of a man he would only identify as a suspect in the Mount Airy shootings was found at about 9:40 p.m. at an Exxon station off an Interstate 85 exit. Lavonia is near the Georgia and South Carolina border.

Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson confirmed that the man was Bowman.

Carlisle said Bowman stopped at the station, went inside, then returned to his car and shot himself with a .40 caliber handgun.

It wasn't immediately known how the victims were connected to the shooter.

Atkinson identified one of the victims as Mark Edward Hall, Jr., 21, and said his department was working to identify the other victim.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, told WXII's newsgathering partner, The Mount Airy News, that she did not hear or see the shootings.

"I've talked to them several times," she told the paper. "(And) he seemed like a nice young man."

The woman said she knew a man and woman lived in the home, along with a person she thought was the woman's son.

"I'm just really sorry that it happened," another neighbor, Betty Lawson, said. "This is really a quiet neighborhood. Everybody seems to be loving and kind people through here."
