Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Tuesday honored two Army soldiers from California, including one from Marin County, who died Saturday when they were shot in Mosul, Iraq.

Spc. Jake Velloza, 22, of Inverness and Spc. Jeremiah McCleery, 24, of Portola died when they were shot by enemy forces, the Department of Defense said.

They were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, according to the Department of Defense.

Schwarzenegger said both men "fought courageously to defend the values of freedom and liberty that define out nation."

"Their service is an inspiration to all of us and we will always remember their sacrifice. Maria and I join all Californians in mourning the loss of these brave men and send our condolences to their family, friends and fellow soldiers during this difficult time," Schwarzenegger said.

Flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff, Schwarzenegger said.

Velloza was a football and baseball player at Tomales High School. He graduated in 2004 and joined the Army in 2006. It was his second tour of duty in Iraq.
