A PREGNANT woman murdered by a knife maniac had named the daughter she was expecting, it was revealed yesterday.

Claire Wilson, 21, had even decorated a room as a nursery for the baby, to be called April.

But she and the unborn tot were slaughtered by a stranger as Claire walked to work at a Pizza Hut branch.

The killer - said to be a former mental health patient - plunged a six-inch knife into her back - then calmly strolled away.

Claire's boyfriend, Adam Kennard, 23, was on the scene soon afterwards.

The couple had been busy making plans for the arrival of their first child.

Claire had told friends that April's room was ready at the home the couple had moved into recently.

Heartbroken Adam returned to the murder scene in Grimsby, Lincs, yesterday with 25 family and friends.

He spent almost 30 minutes there, much of it in tears, as he was supported by pals.

Adam left a sunflower on railings and a balloon bearing the words "Baby Girl".

Other members of the group left flowers, messages and pictures.

One card was accompanied by a pair of red baby shoes.

It read: "Baby April, you would have been the most loved baby in the world. Take care of your mum for us."

The knifeman was reportedly admitted to hospital in Grimsby for three to four weeks last year after making threats to kill and hearing voices. But since his release he had not sought treatment.

After Claire's stabbing onlookers confronted him but he continued walking.

The landlord of a nearby pub, who did not want to be named, said of the knifeman: "He was cool as a cucumber.

"It was as if he had done nothing wrong.

"A member of the public came into the bar, shouting a woman had been stabbed.

"The man and the pub DJ chased after the attacker.

"They caught up with him and our DJ said to him, 'Why have you just stabbed a young girl like that?'

"He said he just shrugged his shoulders. There was a police van in traffic a few yards away. They arrested him and got a similar reaction."

Bystanders tried to help Claire, who was seven months pregnant, as she lay dying with the knife still protruding from her back.

Paramedics arrived shortly after the attack on Sunday afternoon and took her to hospital but doctors could not save her or her baby. Claire's friends described her as one of the "greatest people you could ever meet".

Dave Stembridge, 18, said: "She was amazing. She's going to be missed so much."

Tearful Lara Cole, 16, said: "She was lovely. She was really funny." The Pizza Hut branch closed as a mark of respect yesterday. One of Claire's colleagues said: "She couldn't wait for the birth.

"They knew from scans that it was a girl. Her and Adam weren't married but he used to call her his wife."

Claire and Adam were childhood sweethearts who had been together seven years. They moved to Italy to work four years ago then returned to Grimsby in 2007.

Det Supt Christine Kelk, leading the murder inquiry, said: "We believe it to have been a random attack."

Alan McMullan, 53, will appear in court today charged with Claire's murder.
