Two people from Chester County are dead in Fairfield County this past Monday night and a third is reportedly on life support after a passenger vehicle struck a tractor trailer.

The collision happened at about 4:10 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Highway 215 and Ashford Ferry Road near Salem's Crossroad, according to Barkley Ramsey, the new coroner in Fairfield County. That's about 12 miles south of the Chester-Fairfield County line.

Tammy Mary Pelkey, 21, of 628 Lancaster Highway, Chester, and her husband, Dustin Pelkey, 19, were driving in the couple's 1993 Honda to Lake Monticello with a friend, Anthony Chad Willford. 17, of 1011 Ridgeview Road, Chester, Ramsey said. Tammy Pelkey was driving with Dustin in the front passenger seat.

Tammy Pelkey and Williford died at the scene, according to Ramsey. He said the cause of death for both was multiple trauma. Dustin was airlifted to Richland Memorial, Ramsey said. The last report he had on Dustin's condition said he was on life support. That was around 9 p.m. Monday.

Ramsey said the S.C. Highway Patrol's Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, or MAIT, was on the scene reconstructing what happened, but an early report indicates the car pulled out in front of an oncoming tractor trailer. The car may have run a stop sign, but it is not yet certain, Ramsey said.

Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker was assisting the Fairfield County Coroner's Office with notifications. In addition to the patrol, the Fairfield County Rescue Squad, Feasterville, Blair, and Lebanon fire departments also responded to the call.
