A teenager was gunned down while chasing an attempted burglar near his Southeast Portland home

Police identified the victim in a fatal shooting in SE Portland as Fernando Chavez.

Chavez, a 17-year-old Cleveland High School junior, was chasing a burglar from his home, according to witnesses.

Police were called to the home near the 5500 block of SE Knapp St. around 3:40 a.m. Saturday.

Family members said Chavez was chasing off a man when shots were fired.

Witness and friend of Chavez' Rachel Hostetler and her boyfriend ran after him to come back as he started to chase the burglar. Then she says she saw the gunfire.

Thomas Konschuh, 30, was arrested and charged with murder and attempted aggravated murder.

"He didn't do drugs, he wasn't into gangs, he didn't smoke, he loved to play football," his grandfather Patrick lynch said.

"I just feel so much anger, I can't even cry anymore," she said. "I just feel so much anger toward someone who can take the life of an innocent young man who was the politest boy I ever knew."
