A Hagerstown man was killed and a Lonaconing woman was transported to Cumberland Memorial Hospital following a two-vehicle collision Monday afternoon on Backbone Mountain.

The accident, which is being investigated by the Garrett County Sheriff's Office, occurred at 2:55 p.m. on Maryland Highway near Chestnut Grove Road.

A spokesman for the Sheriff's Office said the accident involved a 2003 Dodge pickup driven by Silvia Faye Jones, 45, of 20900 Charlestown Road, Lonaconing, who was taken to the hospital by Tri-Towns Rescue, and a 1999 Dodge Neon, driven by Jeremy Justin Phillips, 22, who was pronounced dead at the scene by the Garrett medical examiner.

Authorities said Jones was westbound on Maryland Highway when the vehicle went out of control and went into the eastbound lane, striking Phil-lips' vehicle.

Leon Marple, chief of the Bloomington Volunteer Fire Department, which responded to the scene, also said the roadway was snow-covered and slippery. Marple said other emergency units responding to the scene included Westernport Volunteer Fire Department and the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department.

Other agencies involved were the State Highway Administration and Garrett County Roads Department.
