Joshua Plecenik, packing a 12-gauge shotgun, and three friends went to confront another man Saturday night at a place known as the mud hole in south Lake Wales, deputies said.

But instead, Plecenik's friend, Justin Bowen, 19, was unintentionally shot and Plecenik, also 19, now faces manslaughter charges, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. Bowen, of Haines City, was shot in the head and died at the scene.

Plecenik, 19, of Lake Hamilton, along with Bowen and two others went looking for Jacob Fenley about 11 p.m. Saturday night for reasons that are not mentioned in reports of the shooting. And despite warnings from friends to leave the gun, Plecenik took it anyway, an arrest affidavit said.

Plecenik and the other men went to the mud hole, a gathering place where people gather to drive four-wheel-drive vehicles. On the way, Plecenik loaded three more rounds into his gun, which already had two shells inside, deputies said.

When they arrived at the mud hole, which is on property owned by Warner Southern College, Plecenik got out of his truck and fired off a round from the gun near a crowd of people, yelling, "Who wants some?" according to the Sheriff's Office.

Keith Fenley, Jacob's father, grabbed Plecenik, and Plecenik fell down backward.

During a struggle to get the gun from Plecenik, a round fired, striking Bowen in the head, investigators said.

Plecenik told deputies his intention was only to scare people, not to shoot anyone, the report said.

"Joshua Plecenik's failure to act with the prudence that a reasonable person would exercise under the same circumstances and without lawful justification resulted in the killing of Justin Bowen," Detective A.C. Campbell wrote.

Plecenik was held without bail at the Polk County Jail on Sunday night.
