Man killed in single-car accident

A single-car accident on Old U.S. Highway 52 near Welcome killed a man Sunday night, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Stephen Eugene Wade, 20, of Old U.S. Highway 52, was driving south in a 1994 Honda at about 9 p.m. approaching Salem Road. Wade lost control of the Honda on a left curve, ran off the right side of the road and hit a railroad bridge support head-on going approximately 70 mph. The car then slid sideways across the road and came to a stop on the left side of the road.

Emergency workers were dispatched to the scene at 9:18 p.m. where they found Wade seriously injured. He later died at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Troopers believe Wade was traveling about 75 mph in a 55-mph zone. The accident is still under investigation, and drug or alcohol use is unknown.
