A 14-year-old Madera County boy who dreamed of playing pro basketball died Thursday after collapsing during a summer-league basketball game at a north Fresno high school.

Cody Minter of Raymond died about 7 p.m. at Saint Agnes Medical Center.

An autopsy by the Fresno County Coroner's Office showed the cause of death to be a heart problem, but more tests are necessary to determine the precise cause, said Dawn Minter, Cody's mother.

"He loved basketball. That was his passion," said Cody's father, Michael Minter, who was in the gymnasium bleachers at Fresno Christian High School when his son collapsed. "That was his life -- basketball and church."

Only a few weeks earlier, Cody had gone through the graduation ceremony at Raymond-Knowles Elementary School, a kindergarten through eighth-grade school in the Madera County foothills.

Cody's life ended as he headed toward the place he loved so much -- the basketball court.

As described by Michael Minter and Cody's summer team coach, Mark Siverly, Cody had gathered with teammates on the sideline during a first-half time-out in a game against Mendota.

It was the team's second game of the day. Cody was playing well against Mendota, scoring nine of his team's first 12 points.

The time-out over, Cody was headed back to the court when he suddenly leaned on a teammate.

"The other player and I thought he was kidding around. He'd been playing such a great game," Siverly said. But Cody's body stiffened. "I thought he was having a seizure."

Coach and teammates helped Cody to a prone position, and his father rushed to his side. Several people called 911. Paramedics arrived within minutes, Michael Minter said.

Siverly and Minter applied CPR. Siverly said Cody at one point had a slight pulse and shallow breathing.

According to the Coroner's Office, Cody was pronounced dead at Saint Agnes at 6:59 p.m., less than an hour after tip-off of his last game.

Some who knew Cody well said he was in many ways a typical teen. He stood about 5 feet, 11 inches, attended Raymond Community Church, received several awards during his eighth-grade graduation ceremony, and finished his last year at Raymond-Knowles with four straight quarters on the honor roll.

But, they added, he was an exceptional athlete and had character traits to indicate he would grow into an admirable man.

Cody Minter is survived by his parents and two brothers Dustin, 16, and Ryan, 10. Funeral arrangements are pending.
