A Shelby Township man pulled the body of 23-year-old Josh Keelan from a man-made lake in Royal Forest subdivision after his stepdaughter saw something floating.

"I kind of saw something in the water. I didn't know what it was. I thought maybe a football or something," said Stephanie, who only wanted to be identified by her first name.

Once the two identified the object as a body, the man said he pulled the body out.

Investigators are trying to piece together the circumstances that led to Keelan's death.

Keelan's body showed no signs of trauma, cuts, bruises or gunshots. He was fully clothed and was wearing shoes and a cell phone on his belt. A tattoo on his body helped to identify him.

"I think it was an accident," said Keelan's cousin Shelby Miceli. "I don't think anybody did anything to him, and I don't think he did it to himself."

Keelan, the father of a 2-year-old boy, had recently moved into his aunt and uncle's Troy home.

"He was a great dad. He had a rough spot, but he was trying to pull the pieces together," said Miceli.

After Keelan didn't come home from a Fourth of July party in the area, Keelan's aunt and uncle said they knew something was wrong.

"My wife was worried, she hasn't slept in days," said Frank Malinowski.

Neighbors told Stephanie they did see Keelan at a party a few days ago.

"He said that he went to one of these houses and said, 'Where's the party at?' And they kicked him out," said Stephanie.

"I love him. He's in a better place now," said Miceli.
