Police name shooting-suicide suspect

ESSEX, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut state police say a 24-year-old man from Old Saybrook was the suspect who shot his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, kidnapped her and later killed himself as a trooper approached his car in Essex.

Police identified the man as Robert Finkeldey. State records show he had multiple convictions and served jail time over the past several years for assault, threatening and other crimes.

Authorities say Finkeldey shot himself in the head Sunday morning as a trooper approached his car on Route 154 in Essex.

Troopers say he shot the other man Saturday evening in Westbrook and kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, who escaped in Essex and was not injured. The man who was shot remains at Yale-New Haven Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
