A driver suspected of speeding at more than 100 mph when he lost control and smashed into another car in Seal Beach in 2007 will be arraigned today on two counts of vehicular manslaughter for killing two people - his passenger and the other driver.
Deneshio Samuel Lankford, 22, of Long Beach is charged with two felony counts of vehicular manslaughter by unlawful act with gross negligence and faces a maximum sentence of seven years and four months in state prison if convicted.
He is being held on $150,000 bail. His arraignment is scheduled in the Westminster courthouse this morning; it was continued from an earlier hearing.
Lankford was driving a Honda Prelude eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway in Seal Beach at more than twice the posted speed limit on May 20, 2007 when he suddenly veered into the westbound lanes, according to Deputy District Attorney Jason Baez.
He slammed head-on into an oncoming BMW driven by Rick Vetter, 52, causing a chain-reaction crash that involved five cars, according to a statement from the Orange County District Attorney's Office. The impact of the crash sheared Lankford's car into two pieces.
Vetter, of Long Beach, was trapped inside his car and died at the scene due to blunt force trauma. Lankford's passenger, 17-year-old Grisna Meas of Long Beach also died.
Two other drivers involved in the chain reaction suffered minor injuries, including cuts and bruises, according to Baez.
