Students, faculty and staff at Springhill Junior/Senior High School in north Webster Parish are mourning the death of one of their teachers in a car wreck today.

Charles Hughey, described by many as a beloved social studies teacher, died on the way to school.

The wreck happened in Magnolia, Ark., where the 52-year-old Hughey lived.

Arkansas State Police said Hughey ran a red light at the intersection of U.S. 79 and East North Road shortly after 7 a.m. He was struck by a pickup driven by David Traylor.

Traylor was not injured in the crash. Hughey was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

Crisis management counselors were already on the Springhill campus for a workshop today, so they began to counsel faulty, staff and students, school officials said.

Hughey has been a teacher at Springhill for the past 10 years.

"Our thoughts and prayers are will Charles Hughey's family right now," Principal Melanie Jacobs said.
