A 27-year-old man is dead after a fight Sunday outside Dickmann's Sports Bar and police are searching for anyone who might know something about the homicide.

Patrick McGrath was found on the ground in the parking lot with a serious head injury when police arrived after being dispatched at 1:47 a.m. Sunday to the popular sports bar at 469 Orphanage Road. He was taken to University Hospital by the Fort Wright Life Squad where he died Sunday afternoon.

Police Chief Daniel Kreinest tells 9News McGrath was blindsided and struck with one blow.

"What we've been told is that it was basically a one-blow fight that he was hit and that was all there was. He didn't provoke it, he wasn't fighting anyone at the time he was hit," said Kreinest.

Kreinest adds there were witnesses in the parking lot and they are seeking more information to assist in the investigation.

McGrath is survived by a large family including his mom, two brothers and three sisters.

"Patrick was fun loving, full of life, full of laughter, full of making other people laugh, I think that was his goal in life to make everyone laugh," said Norma Oliver, Patrick McGrath's Mom.

Patrick's friends had taken him to the bar to celebrate the purchase of his new truck. He had been working hard at his job at the airport and saving his money.

"He had just finally gotten a truck. Didn't even have it a week, didn't even get to use it," said Oliver.

Now, his mom is left aching for what could have been.

"He didn't have a chance to live his life, didn't have a chance to get married, to have children, such a handsome guy," said Oliver. "It just doesn't seem real and its probably not going to seem real for a long time."

Richard Dickmann, the bar's owner, issued a statement Monday afternoon. It reads, "Dickmann's Cafe is shocked and saddened by the incident that occurred in the parking lot of our Fort Wright facility early Sunday morning. Dickmann's prides itself as one of the safest and most customer-friendly establishments in Northern Kentucky and we are doing everything we can to assist local authorities to ensure that those responsible for this deadly assault are brought to justice. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim. We have no further comment at this time."

The Fort Wright Police Department is asking for anyone witnessing the fight or anyone who has any information to contact the police at (859) 331-2191 or 24-hour dispatch at (859) 727-2424 or to call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040.
