The woman rescued by good Samaritans after her car drove into a retention pond off state Road 417 has died, FHP says.

Dive teams searched the pond after the fire department said it believed three people were in the car, but now it believes only Sparkle Pomeroy, 26, was in the car. She died at Florida Hospital East Monday evening after remaining in critical condition.

The car went into the pond around 9 a.m. Monday and witnesses pulled over to rescue the woman. The fire department said the car lost control and cut across a median and several lanes of oncoming traffic before careening into the water.

Northbound lanes of the toll road were shut down for several hours and reopened just before noon.
