Police said a 22-year-old East Alton man was killed early Sunday morning after he ran a stop sign and crashed into a barricade.

The crash happened around 1:35 a.m. 22-year-old Bradley Werts had just dropped off his girlfriend at her South Roxana home. The two had been at a Christmas party.

Werts, who police said was not wearing a seatbelt, was driving his 2005 Nissan Sentra westbound on Wagon Wheel Road in South Roxana.

Investigators said when Werts reached the intersection of Wagon Wheel Road and State Route 111, he failed to stop at a stop sign and struck an orange barrier. His vehicle came to rest in an embankment.

The coroner pronounced Werts dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Testing will be done to determine if Werts had drugs or alcohol in his system.

Funeral arrangements are pending Paynic Funeral Home in East Alton, Illinois.
