Speed and alcohol contributed to a fatal crash in Rochester overnight in which two friends were fatally ejected from the convertible and another was injured, police said.

Police in Rochester were called to Route 202 shortly after midnight Friday. Police said Latoya Fletcher, 17, of Berwick, Maine, lost control of the car and hit a telephone pole. The car careened a couple hundred feet down the street. Fletcher suffered minor injuries.

Two passengers ejected from the car were pronounced dead at the scene. They were identified as Andrew Lane, 18, of Rochester, and Luke Pendexter, 21, of Berwick, Maine.

Authorities said an initial investigation indicates that both speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash but wouldn't elaborate. Police declined to say whether charges will be filed against the driver.

Power crews worked calmly and methodically to replace an electric pole obliterated in the accident while cousins of one of the victims watched on. Public Service of New Hampshire workers gave a piece of the crushed power pole to them.

"Everybody's so upset that this happened to him," said a cousin of Pendexter. "It's sort of a goodbye type of thing because you know that he was here and he was alive ... We were proud of who he was."

Neighbors said they heard crashing and banging sounds for a full five seconds.

"I grabbed my phone to call 911," said Robin Plickert, who heard Fletcher screaming. "All I remember her saying was, 'Oh my God, they're dead.'"

The crash also woke up Pat Rainboth, who said, "The only person that I know exited the car on her own power was the driver."

Lane and Pendexter were ejected onto the pavement, laying unconscious on the street.

"I knew they were gone. I knew they were passed on," Plickert said.

The car was taken to an auto repair shop, waiting for investigators to piece through it.
