A man and woman with Monroe ties were killed when their car slammed into a moving train in Taylor this weekend.
Taylor police identified the victims as the driver, David Obsorne, 29, of Lincoln Park and his passenger, Tara Druyor, 21, of Monroe. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Osborne is from Monroe, where his parents still live.
Cpl. Mike Caldwell of the Taylor Police Department said the accident occurred around 1 a.m. Sunday on Goddard Rd. west of Allen Rd. They apparently were boyfriend and girlfriend.
Cpl. Caldwell said the Cavalier was heading east on Goddard when, for unknown reasons, it went around two vehicles that were stopped and waiting for a train to pass. The victim's Cavalier struck the sixth car of the freight train that was heading south around 10 to 12 mph.
"For some reason the driver went around the two and never stopped," Cpl. Caldwell said. "It was like he was passing the cars in the turn lane. He never braked."
The car struck the train and bounced off. Cpl. Caldwell said it came to rest about 10 feet from the point of impact and was not dragged by the train. He said neither victim was wearing a seat belt and they were not ejected.
The train had about 30 cars. The crossing where the accident occurred does not have gates but it does have lights and bells, which were activated at the time. Cpl. Caldwell said the drivers of the two vehicles waiting for the train to pass confirmed the lights and bells were working.
Ms. Druyor is believed to be a 2007 graduate of Jefferson High School, where she played in band. She also reportedly was a 2008 recipient of a $2,000 Laverne Norton Scholarship at Monroe County Community College.
Funeral arrangements for both victims are pending. Arrangements for Mr. Osborne, who apparently lived with his grandfather in Lincoln Park, will be handled by Prochnow Funeral Home, Monroe.
Funeral services for Ms. Druyor will be at the Merkle Funeral Service of Monroe.
