An 18-year-old Portage man was killed when his vehicle was struck by a train at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday at Ind. 149 and the CSX railroad tracks, Porter County authorities said.

The man, identified by the Porter County Coroner's Office as Anthony Origel, was northbound on Ind. 149 and crossed the tracks, then did a U-turn and crossed the tracks while southbound, police said.

Police said Origel did another U-turn and drove northbound, stopped on the tracks and was struck by a westbound train.

Origel's vehicle caught fire as a result of the crash, but coroner Robert Schulte said it appears Origel died of blunt force trauma prior to the fire occurring. Schulte said no autopsy will be conducted, but toxicology testing is being done to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

Police and the Coroner's Office are continuing their investigation into the crash and have not determined whether the crash was an accident or if Origel stopped intentionally.

The crossing where the crash occurred is located between the Indiana Toll Road and County Road 1000 North in north Porter County.
