A former University of San Francisco basketball player was killed and another man was critically wounded Tuesday during a shooting in a furniture store parking lot.

Police identified the slain man as Hyman Taylor Jr., 23, of Oakland, who according to the USF website last played for the university during the 2008-09 season. According to the website, the 6-foot-9 Taylor was a star player at Bishop Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before coming to USF.

The other man shot is a 27-year-old San Francisco resident, police said. He was in critical condition Wednesday at a hospital; his name was not released.

The shooting happened about 7:35 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of the Ikea furniture store in Emeryville. Even though the store, at 4400 Shellmound St., is physically in Emeryville, the section of the parking lot where the shooting happened is in Oakland, authorities said.

Police think Taylor and the other man shot were together, but authorities do not have a motive for the attack and have made no arrests, Sgt. Tony Jones said Wednesday. Some guns were found in the parking lot, but Jones refused to say what kind they were or whom police think they belonged to. Police have not been able to interview the wounded man and are waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine which gun killed Taylor.

Both men were able to run from the parking lot after being shot before collapsing on nearby streets. Taylor was pronounced dead where he was found.

According to the USF website, Taylor's best season was 2007-08, when he averaged 3.4 points and 4.3 rebounds in 18 minutes a game. He and three other players were suspended with three weeks left in the 2008-09 season for a practice infraction. Taylor majored in sociology but apparently did not obtain his degree, an official said.

"I was terribly upset by the heartbreaking news of Hyman Taylor Jr.'s death," said Debra Gore-Mann, USF's director of athletics.

"Hyman was working towards the completion of his undergraduate degree. We are trying to cope with the death of this young man and extend our sincerest condolences to Hyman's family, friends and former teammates at this time of incredible sorrow."

The killing was Oakland's 37th homicide of the year. Last year at this time, there had been 45 homicides in Oakland.
