One of the world's top male models who has worked for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Hugo Boss died just hours before the prestigious Milan Men's Fashion Week.

Catwalk favourite Tom Nicon died after falling four storeys from his Milan apartment complex over the weekend. Police are not treating his death as suspicious.

The Daily Mail reports Nicon had just returned from a Versace rehearsal before his body was found.

There are reports the 22-year-old was involved "in a complicated love affair".

"We have spoken to the friends he was staying with and they have told us that he had recently broken up with his girlfriend and was depressed," police told the Daily Mail.

Fashion Week organisers plan to continue with the week's activities, with fashion icon Donatella Versace calling Nicon "a sweet boy".

"We just can't understand why he did what he did. We would never have thought he would do something like this," he told the Daily Mail.

"When we heard the news we were all so upset and we still are all so very sad."

Nicon's death is the latest incident involving models in the past 12 months.

South Korean model Daul Kim, 20, hanged herself in her Paris apartment last November.

US model Ambrose Olsen was found dead in his New York home in April.

High-profile French model Noemie Lenoir, the face of Marks & Spencer, reportedly tried to kill herself with a potentially lethal cocktail of pills and alcohol last month.

In 2008, supermodel Ruslana Korshunova died after she jumped from her Manhattan apartment.
