A Signal Mountain woman died today from injuries suffered in a fall over the edge of a trail at the Falling Water State Natural Area.
About 5:30 p.m. Marie Carpenter, 20, was walking down the path with a friend when she decided to look over the edge and her glasses slipped off her face, said Janice Atkinson, Hamilton County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. When Ms. Carpenter attempted to grab the glasses, she lost her balance and fell 80 to 100 feet to the bottom, Ms. Atkinson said.
Emergency personnel pronounced Ms. Carpenter dead on the scene, and the Criminal Investigation Division was notified to conduct a follow-up investigation.
Police won't release further information until they receive the Hamilton County Medical Examiner's report, Ms. Atkinson said.
