As Lance Armstrong continues his quest for an eighth victory in the Tour de France he is also riding to raise awareness about the millions afflicted with cancer. One name he carries with him belongs to a 20-year-old Auburn man who lost his battle with leukemia earlier this year.
By all accounts, Nicholas James DeSocio was a fun-loving kid who lived life to its fullest. He was first diagnosed with leukemia at 12 and he struggled with the disease until he was 20. He passed away on April 15.
"He had it back. And this time he had it strong. It came back with a vengeance. And he got sick," said his father, James DeSocio.
"He was my best friend. And we had so much fun together. We grew up together. And every day I think about him and I miss him," said his sister, Christine DeSocio.
Nearly three months later, the brother Christine DeSocio playfully dubbed "Ugly" lives in memories and on the back of Lance Armstrong's bike.
Christine entered the I Ride for Livestrong contest, where she earned more "cheers" - or votes - for her brother than any other competitor.
"I had people coming up to me at the bank. I had no idea who they were and they said, 'Christine, I cheered for you!' And I'm like, 'Thank you!'"
That support carried Nicholas' name and story to the Tour de France.
"It's an amazing event watched by people all over the world, some of which I'll be riding for. The first week, an amazing young man named Nicholas DeSocio who actually lost his battle with cancer," Lance Armstrong said.
The DeSocios encourage people to become bone marrow donors by visiting BeTheMatch.org.
