POLICE arrested a 21-year-old man yesterday after a car plunged 20ft into a lake, killing two teenagers.

Anwen Chloe Lane-Busby, 16, and Jai Burkes, 19, died when the car careered down an embankment before flipping over into the shallow water.

The 21-year-old male driver, and two other girls, both 16, escaped death as the car came to rest underwater on its roof following the accident on the A44 at Ponterwyd, near Aberystwyth.

The other two girls were last night named locally as Charlotte Tourle and Amy Valentine.

The driver was yesterday arrested by police investigating the tragedy, which happened just after midnight.

As news of the accident spread throughout the community yesterday, a tribute page to the teenagers, who were both students at Penglais Comprehensive School in Aberystwyth, was set up on the social networking website Facebook.

It read: "R.I.P. You will be missed so much by so many people. You will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with your families. And get better soon Charlotte and Aimee."

One friend, Siwan Thomas, said Anwen was "great fun" and the news of her death had sent shock waves through the community.

"We cannot take it in," she wrote. "Anwen had just done her GCSEs and was enjoying the summer holidays. We are all in shock.

"Anwen was great fun and a lovely person. You just never think anything like this will happen to someone you know. I don't think anyone can take it in."

The car plunged down a 20ft embankment on a bend before careering into picturesque Llywernog Lake.
