The 23-year-old Ontario man who was struck by a vehicle and killed early Sunday on the shoulder of the freeway has been identified as Frank Nguyen, according to the coroner's office.

Nguyen was changing a tire at 2:50 a.m. on a 2001 Acura Integra on the right shoulder of the northbound 57, just north of the 91, when a 2010 Ford Expedition traveled off the paved portion of the roadway and struck the Integra, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Pedro Resendiz, 28, from Fullerton, was driving the Expedition at an unsafe speed on the westbound 91 to the northbound 57 and traveled off the paved portion of the roadway, the CHP said.

The Expedition hit the Integra, which then struck Nguyen, who died at the scene.

Dan Alkin, supervising deputy coroner for the Orange County Sheriff's Department, said Nguyen's girlfriend was uninjured. The CHP said a 26-year-old woman from Ontario was a passenger in the Integra.

The three passengers and driver of the Expedition were not injured, the CHP said.

CHP spokesman John Patterson said they do not plan to make any arrests.
