An Elk Grove Village man killed himself Friday after killing his wife and her son, authorities said.

The dead were identified today as Kenneth Johnson, 47, his wife of 10 years Nanette Johnson, 48, and Nanette Johnson's son, Kenneth L. Sova, 24, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Kenneth Johnson killed himself with a gunshot wound to the head and thermal injuries from lighting the minivan he was in on fire, the medical examiner's office found following an autopsy today. Nanette Johnson and Kenneth L. Sova both died from multiple gunshot wounds in homicides, the office found following their autopsies today.

Officers responding to a call of shots fired about 7:30 a.m. Friday found a man sitting in the minivan in the middle of a soccer field across the street from the Johnsons' home.

The man shot himself as police approached and the van went up in flames, said Deputy police Chief Michael Kirkpatrick. A rifle was found in the vehicle, he said.

Officers found the bodies of the other man and the woman in the condominium soon after, Kirkpatrick said.

The killings appeared to be linked to a domestic problem, he said.

Family and neighbors on Friday said the Kenneth Johnson had been out of work recently, but said they knew of no other source of tension in the family.

The investigation continued through the day as detectives knocked on neighbors' doors and picked around the charred hulk of the van that looked starkly out of place on the well-groomed soccer field adjacent to the Elk Grove Township Community Daycare Center.

Danielle Bonner of Rockford said she grew up in the complex and graduated high school with Kenneth Sova. She said he was a "fantastic dad" to a young son.

"He was a really good friend," Bonner said. "He was always there for me."
