Police are investigating the shooting death of a teenager.

According to authorities, 18-year-old Dakota Donovan was shot at a home in the area of 5290 SW 3 St. at around 7:15 p.m., Wednesday. "The way we found out is the mother and three daughters knocked on our door and said, 'Your son has been shot,'" said Lisa Donovan, Dakota's mother.

Police said they were called to the location and found Donovan with a gunshot wound. "It appears to be accidental at this time. We are currently investigating and interviewing people who were on scene," said Plantation Police Detective Philip Tomman.

Plantation Police said four to five teenagers were inside the home when somehow the gun went off.

Donovan was transported to Broward General Medical Center where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police are not releasing information on who pulled the trigger, but Donovan said Plantation Police told her an arrest is expected within the next 24 hours.

Authorities said the gun involved was a small caliber handgun, but they have not said who the gun belongs to, at this time. "It wasn't Dakota's gun and Dakota didn't shoot himself," said Donovan.

Donovan said Dakota was loved by everyone. "He was wonderful. Everybody really liked Dakota. I don't think he had an enemy in the world," she said.
