A 17-year-old is dead after a confrontation with police overnight in Morganton, the city's Public Safety Office said.

Police said local and state officials are investigating the incident, and Morganton police said that while they know the teen was shot to death, they are not sure who fired the shots.

Morganton police say officers were called about 12:15 a.m. to a residential area on Airpark Drive, after a complaint about loud noise. Police say two officers were confronted by a young man armed with a long gun, and that the man with the gun was shot to death.

A woman identifying herself as Angela Cook told WBTV she was the victim's stepmother and said the young man was a 17-year-old student at Freedom High School in Morganton.

Police say they will supply more information later today.
