A Mt. Aukum resident drowned Tuesday in the middle fork of the Cosumnes River, officials said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office said a 911 call came in at about 3:18 p.m. about a possible drowning in the Outingdale area.

When emergency officials arrived, deputies said, 19-year-old John Fagan Jr., had already been removed from the water by other people in the area and CPR was being performed on him. Paramedics took over but were unable to revive Fagan.

Witnesses said Fagan had been swimming in a river pool, got caught in a strong current and was swept downstream into some rapids, the office said.

El Dorado County officials are asking people to consider river conditions before making any plans during this time of year. Swimmers, kayakers and rafters are among those who should be aware of the high water.
