A woman jumped off the Herbert Hoover Highway bridge just east of Iowa City onto Interstate 80 on Tuesday morning, where she was hit by a semitrailer and killed, authorities said.

Johnson County Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek said the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call about 8:45 a.m. about a person jumping off the Herbert Hoover Highway bridge that spans Interstate 80. The victim, later identified as Shannon L. Hierseman of rural Iowa City, landed in the eastbound lanes of the highway, where she was hit by the semitrailer, Pulkrabek said in the release.

Pulkrabek said in the release that it is thought Hierseman intentionally jumped off the bridge in the path of the truck.

Hierseman was pronounced dead at the scene, Pulkrabek said. The driver of the truck, identified as Stanley T. Engstrand of Luck, Wis., suffered minor injuries and was able to leave the scene on his own, authorities said.
An autopsy will be performed at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Pulkrabek said.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Medical Examiner and West Branch Fire and First Responders.
