The passenger in a pickup died after the truck ran a stop sign and was T-boned by a semi truck on Highway 42, according to state police at the scene on Monday.

The fatal traffic crash on Highway 42 near Winston closed the highway in both directions, and the road remained closed until 11:30 p.m. Monday night while the investigation was on-going.

State Troopers say that just after 10:30 a.m., a dump truck pulling a trailer was heading west on Highway 42 near Brockway Road, when it T-boned the Toyota pickup.

Lt. Doug Ladd told a KPIC News crew, "It was going about 50 miles an hour, as if it just blew the stop sign, as if it wasn't even there. That is not confirmed yet, we are going to talk to some people a little more, but the scene is consistent with what the witness apparently told us."

The pickup slid more than 40 feet down the road, and the dump truck hit an ODOT message board and veered into a field where it rolled over.

The passenger in the pickup, Kaila Boyer, 22, of Riddle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Jesse W. James, 23, also of Riddle, was life-flighted to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland with critical injuries. As of Tuesday morning, officials say his condition has been upgraded to serious.

The truck driver, Dudley Lenhart, 58, of Tenmile, was taken by ambulance to Sacared Heart at Riverbend. As of Tuesday morning, his condition has also been upgraded, now listed at 'Fair.'

Police had the road closed for several hours while they investigated the crash, and traffic was backed up for miles until they could be detoured around the accident.

Officers say it appears everyone was wearing a seat belt.
