A suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of 20-year-old Iris Rodriguez, whose young daughter continues to pray for God to bring her mother back.

Rodriguez's grandmother, Maria Rosas, said 5-year-old Hillary Torres remains devastated. Rosas also is having difficulty coping with Rodriguez's death. The fact that authorities made an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting offers her little comfort knowing Hillary still asks for her mother's return.

Police arrested 29-year-old Jimmy Guitron earlier this month on unrelated charges, but charged him with murder last week in Rodriguez's death. He's being held in the Bexar County Jail without bond.

"She asks me, 'You tell me to ask God for anything. I told Him, 'Please give me my mommy back.' But He hasn't sent her back,'" Rosas said. "(The shooter) took her life, and this child needs her mother."

Rodriguez was fatally shot and her best friend, 18-year-old Jessica Marie Torres, was grazed by a bullet Oct. 13 while outside a convenience store in the 2300 block of Pinn Road.

Police said Guitron was across the street from the store, at the Casablanca Apartments, where he allegedly fired some gunshots in an unrelated dispute.

After hearing the gunshots, Rodriguez, Torres and a third woman began to run and flagged down a passing motorist, but before they could get in the car, Guitron allegedly fired at them, according to police.

Rodriguez sustained a single gunshot wound to the spinal cord and was taken to Wilford Hall Medical Center, where she died.

She was an innocent bystander caught in the middle of a dispute, police said
