Authorities are still not sure what caused a fatal house fire Wednesday night in Martin County. Deputies say it happed at about just before 10p.m. on Dees Ln. just outside of Williamston. Firefighters found the body of 49-year-old Katie Hollis Jordan inside the burned out mobile home.

"They always say there's things worse," said Jane Manning, Katie Jordan's Stepmother. "But it don't take care of things like this."

This house can be replaced but Katie Jordan's stepmother Jane Manning says nothing can replace the woman who lived here. "I heard this commotion, the sirens, and what have you," she said. "So I jumped in my house coat and run out into the front yard. I could see nothing but smoke, flames, and it was a bad looking site honey."

It's a difficult site to see for a member of the family and close friend who lived just around the corner. "I didn't know anything about Kathy I felt like she might have been with a friend of hers but I was wrong."

The Williamston Fire Dept. searched the house as soon as they arrived. They say Jordan was already dead when they found her lying on the bedroom floor. Her body was burned but had no other obvious injuries.

"I got to know her and I got to love her," said Jean Bowen, the property owner.

Bowen says the last time she saw Jordan was about three weeks ago when she came by to pay her rent. Jordan had been taking EMT classes at Martin Community College. She recently quit to recover from a hip surgery. Bowen remembers the first time Jordan invited her over to visit. "It looked like a little doll house, a flower shop," she said. "It had baby dolls and flowers and pillows all sitting around and it really just looked like a fantasy place. It was darling."

Now all that's left are the memories of their friend.

"Just a nice girl, a young lady," said Manning. "I'm going to miss her."

The Martin County Sheriff's Office says they still don't know what caused the fire. Even the medical examiner's report might not clear things up.
