Erika Schlosser had a heart to heart conversation on Valentine's Day with her father where she promised she was never going to touch heroin again.

The 19-year-old woman had battled addiction for more than a year, and told her father, Ron Schlosser, she wanted to turn her life around. But two days later, Erika Schlosser was found unconscious in her bedroom and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital in what is believed to be a heroin overdose.

Her death was the second heroin overdose in three days in the Fenton area. Briona Jawhari, 17, was found dead in her Fenton Township home on Feb. 14. The two girls knew each other.

Now Ron Schlosser is speaking out about what he believes is a heroin problem in the community.

"We don't want to see any more children get hurt," said Schlosser, 51. "We want to make the community aware that this is here. I don't think anyone knew it was here."

Schlosser said his daughter had "a heart of gold" and had a philosophical view on life. She would take in stray animals and get them a home, her father said.

"She didn't have the thought process of a 19-year-old," Schlosser said. "Her thought process was how was she going to save the world."

Her funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sharp Funeral Home in Fenton.
