A 29-year old man took his life Sunday evening at the Springfield jail.

This is the first suicide reported at the new Springfield Detention Center.

Police Chief Jerry Smith told KEZI 9 News that there were no signs that 29-year old Kit Milo Brittain was suicidal, but, at around 5 o'clock Sunday night, Brittain hung himself by his bed sheets.

Officials tried to revive him, but the attempts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Britain was alone in his cell at the time.

He was arrested on misdemeanor charges for urinating in public and resisting arrest.

Chief Smith did say Britian had a criminal background prior to the last arrest.

"He was on probation and we have some reason to think that he was concerned with spending some substantial time in prison," said Chief Jerry Smith with the Springfield Police Department. "Whether or not there was some foundation to that concern by him, I don't know."

Brittain had been in jail for seven days when he died.

Oregon State Police is investigating.

State police will look to see if something could have been done or if policies need to be tweaked to prevent a situation like this from happening again.
