Authorities suspect drinking and speed were factors in a crash early Saturday in foggy southeastern Minnesota that killed a former high school wrestler and injured three other teenagers, one of them critically.

Passenger Jacob Baalson, 19, of Kenyon, Minn., was killed in the crash, which involved a van rollover on westbound County Road 30 in Holden Township, according to the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office.

The injured included another former wrestler, Chad Lexvold, 19, also of Kenyon. A CaringBridge.org webpage started by sister Sheila Lexvold said Lexvold is at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester with head injuries, fractured vertebrae, two collapsed lungs and a broken wrist. He was in critical condition Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The crash occurred about a half-mile from Lexvold's home. Sheila Lexvold said Monday morning that her brother, a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, was driving the family van when it left the road about 2:15 a.m.

Also injured were Luke Trevis, 18, from Nerstrand, Minn., and Nicole Groth, 17, of Zumbrota, Minn., said Chief Sheriff's Deputy Lyle Lorenson. They also were taken to St. Marys, Lorenson said.

Trevis was in fair condition, the hospital spokeswoman said. And Groth apparently was treated and released, according to Lexvold's CaringBridge site.

Lorenson said the crash occurred on a "fairly sharp" curve in the road. Emergency helicopters responding to the crash were unable to land because of fog, Lorenson said.

"That curve, a dark road and a little fog" made for a potentially dangerous setting, he said.

Baalson and Lexvold were "partly ejected" from the van, and Lorenson said investigators were looking into who might not have been wearing seat belts in the crash.

The Kenyon-Wanamingo School District issued a statement signed by Superintendent Jeffrey Evert, high school Principal Patrick Walsh and wrestling coach Matt Ryan.

"We are grieving with the Baalson family and trying to provide emotional support for Chad and his family as he fights through his injuries,'' the statement said. "In turn, we are also hoping for the health of the other individuals involved, as well as their families."

As Baalson was nearing graduation this year, "he was demonstrating leadership in our robotics program and still growing as a man," Walsh said. "We will definitely miss his energy and his smile."

A wake for Baalson is scheduled for 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Michaelson Funeral Home in Kenyon. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Nerstrand.

Lexvold is among four wrestling brothers from Kenyon-Wanamingo. Drew (Chad's twin), Nathan and Mitchel have been Class 1A state champions in their weight classes. Chad has been a state runner-up. Their father, Wayne, has been their assistant coach.

Drew wrestles for the University of Minnesota and Nathan for Augsburg College in Minneapolis. Mitchel won his high school state championship this year as a junior.
